How To Planning a Home Office?

Whether you work in an office or in your home, make sure that you function as efficiently as possible. Assess all aspects of your work, from the environment to the tasks that you do, to determine whether they suit you and meet the demands of the job.

If possible, set up a home office in a room away from the main living areas. Otherwise, use a quiet part of a living room or dining area, or adapt an empty space such as the area underneath a staircase. If you plan to work in an area that is also used by others in the household, set aside a place to store office items once you have finished work.

Make sure that you have ample lighting for your needs, and install extra outlets if necessary.

Make a floor plan to decide where to position furniture. Allow at least 39 in (1 meter) clearance around each large item. Organise your desk area, shelving, and cabinets so that you do not have to move far in order to find information.

  • Arranging an office Position equipment so that vital items, such as a telephone, are within easy reach. At the same time, make sure that there is enough space on the desktop for work.
  • Siting outlets Ask an electrician to install outlets near all electrical items so that you will not have to trail cords across a floor.
  • Securing cords If you have to lay cords across a floor, secure them to the floor with insulating tape so that people will not trip over them.
  • Using daylight bulbs Make sure that the work area is lit properly. If possible, fit lighting with daylight bulbs, which will minimise strain on your eyes.
  • Minimising clutter Keep the floor area and desktop free of clutter. If your work area is tidy you will be able to find items easily and will always have clear space for work.
