Oven Mitts

Oven Glove

  • Make your pattern and complete the oven glove following the instructions given on page 64. The oven glove was bound using 4cm (1 1/2 in) wide bias strips of the narrow striped fabric, forming a finished binding width of 1cm (3/8 in). You will need to cut and join the strips to form one length of about 130cm (52in).

Oven Mitts

  • Make your oven mitts following the instructions given on page 65. The end sections of these mitts are a single layer of fabric – instead of binding the opening edge, fold 2cm (3/4 in) to the wrong side, turn under the raw edge and stitch in place. The mitts were bound using 4cm (1 1/2 in) wide bias strips of the narrow striped fabric, forming a finished binding width of 1cm (3/8 in). You will need to cut and join strips to form one length of approximately 2m (2 1/4 yd).
  • Cut the strip of variegated striped fabric into four pieces – two 35cm (14in) long and two 45cm (18in) long. Press 1cm (3/8 in) to the wrong side along one long edge of each strip.
  • Lay two strips of different lengths together with their ends and pressed edges matching and right sides facing. Starting at one corner point away from the pressed edges, stitch diagonally across the end. Trim away the excess triangle of fabric and press the seam open to form a mitred comer. Repeat to make the other three mitred corners.
  • Lay the right side of the mitred corner sections against the wrong side of the large rectangle and stitch together along all four edges. Trim away the corners. Fold the mitred sections over to the right side. Press, placing the seams along the pressed edges. Stitch the inner pressed edges of the mitred section in place.
